Yet Another Blog is Born...

(This post was on my original crocheting blog, which I have since moved over to here. All hail simplicity!)

Why am I starting a blog? No idea. I guess partly because I get really (REALLY) bored at work, and partly because I like sharing crochet ideas with others. Oh, and partly because I'm an attention-whore who likes talking about myself without interruption.

So, let's talk crocheting:

My g-ma taught me how to crochet in November of 2005. It took me about three intense days to make this hat:

Bad picture, but you get the idea. For about three months after learning, I struggled to get used to crocheting. I've been known to yell, curse, and throw hooks across the room. Once that trial period ended, however, I fell in love with it. I finally attempted a scarf:

It turned out pretty well (if you don't include the rows that came undone...oops!). Since then, I've worked on mostly hats and scarves, all pretty basic.

This year, I've set a goal: I will crochet all or most Christmas gifts for friends and family, rather than spending an exorbitant amount of money (well, by my cheap standards) on impersonal items purchased at the last minute. I think it's a great idea. Of course, come December 26th I'll probably find my house covered in egg nog and shredded yarn. Live and learn, right?

Anyhow, here are some of the projects I've worked on in preparation of Christmas (prepare yourself, I make a lousy model):

Strangely enough, these two hats came from the same pattern in Crocheted Hats:

The gray hat is closer to the picture in the book, but I chose to not include the enormous (and time-consuming) flower. For the green one, I used a worsted yarn and kept it brimless.

These two hats are also from one pattern in the Crocheted Hats book. These are the hats that I'll probably end up giving to some anonymous coworker...I'm just not feeling them regardless of how enthused I look in the first picture.

And a baby hat:

This scarf is a little on the skimpy side, but we'll pretend that was intentional. :D

::sigh:: What is there to say about this ugly thing? BFF convinced me to make a hat with brown and blue, which sounds hot. But no, this shade of blue has to be the ugliest thing out there. And unfortunately, I bought A LOT of it. Stay tuned for more ugly projects featuring this yarn.

Love these pieces. I'll have a hard time giving them away.

About the pink scarf, that is one of my favorite patterns. I use a size K hook with really thick part-mohair yarn. As a result, there are only about five stitches per row. I'm able to finish a scarf in about an hour or two. Great for last minute gifts. Once I figure this whole blog thing out, I'll put the pattern up.

(The blue and green scarf is made using the same pattern but with thinner yarn and a smaller hook.)
